Grand Rapids is located on PTH# 6 with the closest neighboring urban community being Ashern and The Pas. The community is approximately 250 kilometers south east of the Town of The Pas and 400 kilometers north of the City of Winnipeg. Grand Rapids is situated at the mouth of the Saskatchewan River where it runs into Lake Winnipeg, downstream from Manitoba Hydro’s Grand Rapids hydroelectric station. Misipawistik Cree Nation is located in the east and south banks of the Saskatchewan River, immediately across from the town site of Grand Rapids.

The community of Grand Rapids is governed by two authorities, Misipawistik Cree Nation, a community of 591 (Statistics Canada, 2001 Census) and the Town of Grand Rapids, a community of 355 (Statistics Canada, 2001 Census). Grand Rapids the community is divided into three distinct areas: Misipawistik Cree Nation, Town of Grand Rapids, and the Hyrdo Sub-division.

Misipawistik Cree Nation constitutes the part of the community, which is located on reserve land, and is governed by Chief and Council. The Town of Grand Rapids contains the land under provincial jurisdiction including the area know as the hydro sub-division. The hydro sub-division is the area in the community where many of the staff and families who work for Manitoba Hydro reside. The Town of Grand Rapids was incorporated on January 1, 1997. Mayor and Council govern both the town and the hydro sub-division.
